There are many urban myths about why men go bald: Over vigorous brushing or washing, long hair putting strain on the root to the extent that it drops out and even the wearing of hats have been blamed. The truth of the matter is much simpler: male hair loss is due, in 95 per cent of cases, to genetics.

This statistic is either reassuring or depressing depending on your viewpoint. Reassuring in that male hair loss has very little to do with how fit you are or how good your diet is and depressing in that those who have genes which make them predisposed to hair loss are going to start thinning at some point.

About 25 percent of men begin balding at the age of 30 and 33 per cent begin balding by the age of 60. Some men will start balding at an earlier age, in their teens or their twenties - Prince William being a case in point.

The combination of two factors, the presence of hair loss gene and the male hormones, which are known as androgens, causes hair loss. If a man were to be castrated before puberty the lack of these hormones would mean that he would not go bald, even if he had the hair loss gene, though perhaps that would be going a bit far as a preventative measure.

With the advent of the drug Finasteride commonly known as Propecia, however, men now have a hugely effective and affordable method by which to slow or prevent hair loss and it certainly beats castration at the onset of puberty.
