Esthetics and skin care professionals are in high demand, but the beauty industry is still a competitive one. Getting into esthetics schools and taking esthetics courses can put you on the right track for a great career, but if you want the best possible job after graduation, you will want to take a few extra steps to ensure that you start your career on the right foot:

1) Take the best skin care courses – taught by the best instructors. All skin care schools offer a range of courses. While some esthetics courses will be requirements, you should select classes that will challenge you and teach you the most. Look to take a range of classes that really build your skills. Take extra courses if you need to. This will look much better to potential employees than a lackluster transcript. Also, look for courses that are taught by instructors with a great reputation. It will look more impressive on your resume if you have worked with professionals who are experts in their field.

2) Get some practical work experience. Your beauty school likely offer some form of apprenticeship, internship, work-study or volunteer programs. If your school does not offer something like this, work at a salon or spa on your own or set up your own volunteer experience to get some practical experience.

3) Get great grades. Most potential employers get lots of job applicants from a variety of beauty schools. Getting good grades in your cosmetology program helps you stand out in a crowd and shows employers that you are serious about your career.

4) Get great recommendations. Lots of students pass through cosmetology schools each year, so it is easy for instructors to get jaded when writing recommendations. However, you will need letters of reference from your instructors and the employers you volunteer with in order to land a great job. Therefore, start early. Get to know the people you work with and work on making a good impression. Make sure that the people you work and study with are familiar with your work, so that they can make specific, good comments when it is time to write you a reference.

5) Put together a great portfolio. Not all jobs require a portfolio and not all esthetics and skin care schools and programs help you put together a great portfolio. If your esthetics school offers courses, workshops, or seminars in portfolios, make sure to take them. Even if there are no such resources at your school, go online or talk to your instructors to get help putting together a great portfolio of your best work. It can help you land a job because it lets you show employers your work quickly and easily.
